PLN 16 "Suspect sought in Greeley shooting"

I read "Suspect sought in Greeley shooting" By the Denver Post, and it is about the chase for a large bald man who allegedly shot another man in the leg and torso. I think what matters in this article is the affects shooting somebody has on the shooter, and weather the affects are similar to shooting someone in a war time stuation. Reading this article made me think, Are the affects of shooting someone in war the same as just shooting someone on the street? While i think that most solidiers killing other soldiers in justified because its kill or be killed, where as on the street most killings occur out of hate for someone else. I think that It probably aaffects soldiers to kill people more, because soldiers realize that the enemy that they are fighting are just like them, forced to fight by other people, and when they take a life it also sticks in their head forever. I think on the street that killers are blind with rage and do not realize the magnitude of their actions until its too late. This relates to the world because wars and killings happen all the time, and while the enemy may be different in different countries, the toll it takes in a soldiers heart must be similar. Tjis also relates to me because reading the book "All Quiet on the Western Front" has really opened my mind abvout the affects that war has on people.

PLN 15 "Man found dead of gunshot had been shoveling snow"

I read "man found dead of gunshot had been shovelling snow" by the associated press it is about a 46 year old man that was shot dead on his driveway while he was shoveling snow, i think what matters is why someone would commit a crime like this? The man that died was going outside to clear his driveway of snow and insted he ended up dead. Any crime like this makes me wonder why crimes need to happen, and why people need to kill other people. This matters because there are so many people around the world that lose their lifes for no reason all over the globe, and it makes me wonder how great a world with no crime would be, but i know that this could probably never happen. This connects to the world because there are senseless murders like this being committed like this everyday in every part of the world, and i think that it is tragic that this kind of crime cannot be eliminated. This also connects to me becauser it makes me think of a song by Underoath called "Its Dangerous Business Walking out your front door" it is a song about car crashes and other things that you do everyday that could kill you and this is a man that walked outside expecting to come back inside in 15 minutes, and never did.

PLN 14 "Man critical after Colfax Stabbing"

I read "Man Critical after Colfax stabbing" by Monte Whaley, and what matters in this article is the health of both men, the victim and the assasin. The victim was beaten and stabbed once in the chest ob Colfax and Pearl Street. I think that this incident can be related to what Paul experiences in chapter 9 of "All Quiet on the Western Front", when a enemy soldier falls into the crater that Paul is hiding in, Paul abruptly stabs the soldier, to protect his own life. But while the soldier is laying there dying, Paul realizes the magnitude of what he has done, Paul realizes that this soldier is not an enemy, but a comrade. Paul realizes that this man has a mother just like him, and that this man is no different than him. This makes me wonder if the stabbing assasin is mentally healthy at this moment, because he could be going through the same after effects of hand-to-hand killing that Paul went through. While i am not comparing this street confrontation to the horrors of war, death in the heat of battle or death on the streets, death is death. This incident relates to me because i live in the same area that this crime happened, and i am concerned that things like this can strike so close to home. This also relates to the world because crimes like this can occer anywhere in the world, but i think that the effects and the trauma that can happen to the killer, or the victem if they do not die are very similar between all cases of this nature.

PLN 13 "Canadiens Retire Roy's No. 33"

I read "Canadiens Retire Roy's No. 33" by the Associated Press. This matters because Patrick Roy is the best goalie the NHL has ever seen with and can claim ownership to more than 10 records in the NHL record book, including Regular season wins (551), playoff wins (151), playoff shutouts (23), and Conn Smythe, or the playoff MVP, throphies, withe 3. Patrick Roy was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1984, played his first game late in 1985, and the next seaon was an all time starter as a rookie. Not only was Roy a starter at age 20, but he led the Montreal Canadiens to win the 1986 stanley cup as a rookie, winning the playoff MVP for the first time in his storied career. He would spend 9 years with the Montreal Canadiens, also winning the stanley cup, and MVP honors in 1993. Patrick Roy was traded to The Colorado Avalance on December 5th 1995. He would spend 9 more equally successful years in Colorado, winning two more stanley cups in 1996, and 2001, and also win one more MVP in 2001. This matters because this may be the best goalie the the NHL has ever seen, and it is unlikely the there could be another legend like Patrick Roy in the hockey world in a very long time. This relates to the world because hockey is a sport that is a lifestyle in Canada, just like everyone skiies in Colorado, everyone plays, watches and talks about hockey in Canada. That is why this is a big deal to the fans of the Canadiens, and hockey fans everywhere, because a legend has claimed his spot among the titans that rest in the rafters of the Bell Centre, the home of the Monteal Canadiens, and 24 stanley cups.

PLN 12 "Yes they can, No we cant"

I read " Yes they can, No we cant" by Lina Ben Mhenni, what matters in this article is the people in Tunisia want change because now they are seeing the great change for the American people are beginning with Obama, and they want that as well. "In its 50 years of independence Tunisia has had only 2 presidents" said Lina in his article. The president for the last 21 years has been Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, and while he declares Tunisia a democracy, he has made all the decisions during his term, and now Lina and other Tunisians like him want change like they are seeing in America. Hearing the cry of the people Ben Ali was re-elected to a fifth 5- year term sayin that he would give freedom and respect for human rights, as well as reviving democracy. But Lina and other citizens want someone else. This relates to me because it shows how lucky we are to live in a contry that has so many advantages over almost every country, we live in a country that poverty could be considered rich in other countries, and this article shows me that i should not take advantage of my freedoms, because they are privilages. This also relates to the world because there are many other countries like Tunisia that want independence, but they may not be able to achive this.

PLN 11 "Bond back on the big screen"

I read "Bond, gadgets, girls back on the big screen" by Mike Pearson i think what matters was that there is another James Bond movie out, who is pretty much the coolest guy ever besides Chuck Norris. Quantum of solace, the 22nd James Bond movie is now out, and this time Bond is out for revenge against the people that killed his girlfriend. What matters is that James Bond id a movie that everyone can enjoy, and movies are something that can bring every one together, no matter if you are young or old, boy or girl, everyone loves movies and there are not very many that are as classic as James Bond. This relates to the world because there are people in the world that are undercover agents like james bond, and it shows how cool it would be to have that job, as well as risky and adrenaline-pumping. I love James Bond and i hope to see this movie as soon as i can!

PLN 10 "Pedestrian killed in Denver Drive-by Shooting

I read "Pedestrian killed in Denver drive-by shooting" by Kieran Nicholson and what matters is that a man lost his life much earlier than he should have, because no one should die when they are only 21 years old. A young man that was 21 years old was walking with two of his friends at about 10:45 lawst night when he was shot by a car that was driving through the corner of South Decatur street andWest lliff Avenue. What matters is that another young man in the world has lost his life earlier than he should have. This murder does not just affect this man. It also affects his whole family, the two friends he was with, as well as all of his other friends. This is another murder of someone in the world that has not had a chance to fully experience life, and he will never get to experience any of the things that he had not already accomplished in life. I think that Murder is a horrible tragity, especially when it happens to someone who is as young as this man. I hope that everyone that is being affected by this shooting is able to fully heal, and get on with their life without this young man.

PLN 9 "Smith, Carlos pleased By Marshall's intent"

I read "Smith, Carlos Pleased bt Marshall's Intent" by Tim Dahlberg, and what matters to Brandon Marshall is showing how far racial equality has come because Barack Obama was elected president and Marshall feels that maybe racial differences have finally been put aside. The Broncos played thursday night against the Cleveland Browns and after Brandon Marshall pulled in the game-winning touchdown catch in the 4th quarter he pulled a black glove out of his pants, bowed his head and put his black-clad fist into the sky. This is an obvious reference to the 1968 olympic games in Mexico City, when racial tension was at an all time high two black sprinters Tommy Smith and John Carlos held up their clenched fists with black gloves. Many thought this was a symbol for black power, but all the two olympians wanted was raacial equality, something that was without a doubt achived on Tuesday. "I think he just wanted people to know what was going on" Tommy Smith said about Marshalls touchdown celebration. This relates to me because it was very interesting to see that some things that happened 40 years ago still apply to the present day. This also relates to the world because while blacks have the same rights and restrictions as whites, there are still racist Americans that do not want that for blacks. This election symbolizes the realization of a country that the color of somebodys skin does not change the person that they are.

PLN 8 Nuggets better with Billups

I read Nuggets better with Billups by Aaron J. Lopez, and i think what matters to chauncey Billups is living back in his hometown of Denver and having the chance to be able to play with a superstar like Carmelo Anthony. It is a huge loss for the Nuggets to lose possibly a top 5 player in the NBA like Allen Iverson, but Chauncey billups will have better chemistry with Carmelo Anthony, and that has the potential to make the Nuggets a much bettter team. I think That Allen Iverson will also join a very, very skilled Detroit team that now has the capability to easily win the NBA championship. This relates to the world because it shows how drasticly things can change in the span of a couple hours . Before Allen Iverson was traded he was probably preparing himself for the next opponent the Nuggets would face, but now he is in Detroit. This also relates to me bacuse i like the Nuggets and its interesting to see if the team will be better or worse with this change of player personelle.

PLN 7: Nuggets rally from 18 down to win in OT

I read "Nuggets rally from 18 down, win OT" by Chris Tomasson I think what matters to the Nuggets is winning their first game of the season, because that is a good tone to set for the season, and hopefully another win towards their cause of making the playoffs, and winning a world championship. The Nuggets played the Los Angeles Clippers at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and after struggling in the first in the first half, the Nuggets came back in the second half to dominate play, and come back from an 18 point deficet to force overtime. What matters to the Nuggets is getting their first win of the season, the Nuggets also showed how well they can play in one half, and if they play that way for the rest of the season they can be a dominating team in the West. This relates to me because it is great to see a team from my home city doing well, and it makes people relize that the Nuggets can be a legitimate team in the Western conference. This also applies to the world because when a city's sports teams are doing well the mood around the city changes so much, last year the whole Denver area was filled with excitement when the Rockies reached the World Series for the first time in the franchise's history, sports can make the difference between a good day and a bad day, it gives us all a common cause to root for, and it is something that most people can talk to each other about and something that makes life fun

PLN 6 Man Holds hostage in Denver apartment

I read "Man Holds Hostage in Denver Apartment" byJoey Bunch and i think that what matters to the suspect is doing whatever he can to evade getting arrested because he is going to extreme measures like taking hostages in an attemt to avoid the police. The suspect allegedly stole a car then crashed the stolen car and went into a apartment building and took a family he does not know hostage. The suspect has arrest warrants for several other carjackings, but he has let all hostages except one go. What matters to this suspect is not getting caught by the cops because he knows that he will get in severe trouble for several carjackings, as well as what thyey will charge him for holding an innocent family hostage. I think his decisions are very stupid because no matter what he does he will get caught by the cops and the longer he waits and commitsmore crimes, the more trouble he will get in. This connects to me because i live in Denver and i am very sypethetic for this innocent family that had a criminal walk into their apartment and hold them hostage, despite the fact that he doesnt know any of them and they have never done anything to him. This also connects to the world because crimes like this happen everyday and the USA actually has a lower crime rate than many less fortunate countries, and it would be very good for the world if these events happen as infrequently as they do in America.

Bali Bombers PLN 5

I read "Bali Bombers Execution date set" by Ivan Armiyanto, what matters to Ivan is that the people who died in the bombings get justice for their deaths. Ivan wrote about the 2002 Bali bombings in Indonesia, where 202 people were killed by two suicide bombers in seperate nightclubs across the street from each other. The first bomber wore a vest strapped with explosives and went into Paddy's pub, and detonated his bomb. Just as people were evacuating Paddy's pub a white Mitsubishi van pulled up in front of Sari's club, located across the street from Paddy's pub, and the 1.125 ton bomb inside the van was detonated, killing dozens more. Ivan is very horrified that something like this could happen and so closely affect him and the place that he lives. Ivan wrote in his article that he was relieved to see that the three organizers of the bombings; Imam Samudra, Ali Ghufron, and Amrozi, who is also known as the smiling bomber are scheduled to be put to death by firing squad in early November. Despite pleading that it was the islamic belief and values that led them to bomb a tourist-filled area of Bali. I can connect how Ivan feels to me because i know that i would also feel terrified and unsafe knowing that terrorists could strike close to me at any time. This also connects to myself and the world because there have been many other mindless acts of terrorism, Like 9/11 that have affected everyone in the world and left a certain scar in all of our hearts.

Jamaca's senseless murders

I read Jamaca's senseless murders by Stunner, and what matters to Stunner is that he is shocked by the violent crimes that are happening to innocent women across the small nation of Jamaca. Stunner wrote about Jamaca, despite being one of the smallest Latin America, it has one of the largest crime rates, and that it really doesnt hit home how horrifying this is until someone he knew got abducted and then killed. What matters to Stunner is his nation, his family and friends, and his own safety. He is concerned about his nation because Jamaca could be destroyed by the anarchy that the murderers are creating. He is also concerned about his friends and family because one of his college friends has already been killed by this tragic nature, and he has no idea who it could happen to next, all he can do is hope that it is no one that he knows. i can connect to Stunner because i know that if i lived in a crime-ridden community that i could not help but worry what was happening to my friends, or neighbors, or parents. I would also be very shocked and outraged that things like this could haooen to innocent people everywhere. This also relates to the world because while we all hope that this is an unique story, there are many similar stories to this one from all over the world. i hope that the senseless murders in Jamaca will stop, and leave people to live in peace.

The Nata Village Blog

I read the Nata village blog about solar keratosis. Solar keratosis is a type of skin desiese that affects white skinned people in Botswana, i think that this is a very dangerous desise considering how difficult it is to get medical attention in africa, specificly the small villages. There are a lot of questions that are left unanswered by this blog, for instance, what are the symptoms of this disiese? could you get solar keratosis in America or Europe? i think that it is essential to help the victems of this ailment because the people who are vulnerable to this are kand of in a 3rd world part of the planet and it is mandatory that they get help that might not be available to them right now because of their location

Machines are Using Us

Notes:

one paragraph response of what matters.

Director: michael wesch

writing is unlinear and unperfect. digital text is better. you can do more on web. are internet tools using us or are we using them? HTML describes what something is. study of why human are the way they are. web 2.0 tools is the machine using us?? rethink everything.

why do we value technology more than paper.
wierd
what is the point?
machines
everytime we click we teach the machine something

In "machines are using us" by Michael Wesch i think what matters is the affect technology has on the way people act and do things. Without technolgy and the tools that the web provides for us we would have to do everything on paper and we would not have access to any of the information that is online that people can currently easily access. If we did not have the technology that we do right now it would be harder to get accurate information, do research and many other things that we take for granted right now. It is interesting to think what is the machine, and what is the user because these days, people depend on the machines almost as much as the machines need us to work. In your everyday routine i bet there are not more than five things that do not require technology. So it could be that the machines now control us and our lifestyles and i think that is the issue that matters in this video.

What matters to Nate L

What matters to me
The first three pictures in collage are pictures of my family, which is definitely something that matters to me because my family helps through everything, helps me have a good time, and they are the people I have to come home to every day. The first picture is a picture of my step- mom on the left and my step sister Caitlyn on the right. This picture was taken while we were river rafting on the Colorado River in July. My dad got re-married last year and ever since both of them have been a big part of my life. My second picture is a picture of me at my continuation with my dad and my sister. This picture is important to me because, if I hadn’t passed middle school and gone on to high school I wouldn’t be in your class! My third picture is my sister before prom in her prom dress. My sister is important to me because she can drive me places. And I have to live with her all the time.
The second line of pictures is all pictures of my friends. My friends are important to me because they support me no matter what I do, they give me advice when I need it, and they always listen when I need them to. The first picture is of Tyrel, Geordie, and Sam in Washington D.C. this picture is especially important to me because the 8th grade Washington trip was probably some of the best days of my life because they were so much fun. The second picture is a picture of one of my best friends Sam Nylund. He is one of the funniest kids I know (in the picture he is screeching and he sounds exactly like a nasghoul in Lord of the Rings) and he is a really good friend because he always knows when to joke and when to be serious. The last picture is of my friend Geordie. He is probably the weirdest kid you will ever meet but he is hilarious and always fun to hang out with so he is a friend that really matters to me.
The third line is all pictures of sports because sports are something that really matter to me. The first picture is of Brandon Marshall stiff arming a Minnesota Vikings defender. I included this picture because I really like football and the Broncos are my favorite team. The second picture is of Troy Tulowitzky making a defensive play. I used to not like baseball but now it is also one of my favorite sports. The last picture in my collage is Joe Sakic lifting the Stanley cup in 2001 when the avalanche defeated the Devils in 7 games to win a championship.
These are nine things that are very important to my life right now and I hope these things continue to help me through high school and the rest of my life.
